A man arrested as part of an attempted murder investigation remains in police custody.

Officers investigating the assault of a man in Southampton on Tuesday evening have been granted more time to question a man in connection with the incident.

Emergency services descended upon Kent Street following reports of the assault just after 8pm.

Officers, along with paramedics, attended the address and a man in his 40s was taken to hospital where he remains in “serious condition”, police said.

The 35-year-old man from Southampton arrested on suspicion of attempted murder remains in police custody after a 36-hour warrant of further detention was granted today.

A huge police cordon was in place on Tuesday night with residents asked to move away from the area.

On Wednesday morning, the cordon remained at Kent House as crime scene investigators were seen going into the property.

Armed police remained in the area and PCSOs were patrolling the streets.

A 34-year-old woman from Southampton was previously arrested on suspicion of intentionally assisting/encouraging the commission of an offence.

She has now been released from police custody with no further action.

Police are appealing for anyone with information regarding the incident or who was in the area between 7.30pm and 8pm on Tuesday and saw an altercation take place to get in touch.

A police spokesperson said: “Perhaps you were driving through the area at the time and captured something on dash cam, or maybe you have mobile phone or CCTV footage that may help our enquiries into the circumstances of this incident?

 “We are particularly keen to speak with a man who was walking through the area at the time and we believe saw the moments leading up to the incident. If this was you, please get in touch with the police as we think you have vital information to help us progress our enquiries.
