SAINTS boss Russell Martin played down reports suggesting Che Adams is closing in a move to Wolves but admitted he should not have been allowed to reach the last 12 months of his contract.

Martin is unsurprised that Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in signing the 27 year old on a free transfer.

Adams has four years of top-flight experience and has fired 15 goals for Southampton this season, including five in his last seven games.

Recent reports elsewhere have linked the Scotland international with an advancing move to Premier League outfit Wolves.

However, Martin told the Daily Echo: "Last summer I read that Che had signed for about four clubs.

"In January I read that he'd signed for about four clubs as well, so it doesn't surprise me. He's out of contract.

"He's doing everything he can to be fit for tomorrow and hopefully, you'll see him on the pitch.

"Che is a brilliant character. He is a brilliant man. I love him to bits. I love what he's done for us on the pitch.

"In the last two or three months, he's grown and grown, and the confidence is there. He's been amazing.

"The role he's played for the team, on and off the pitch - I have nothing but good things to say about him.

"Would it surprise me to see a Premier League team interested in him? No.

"I've had conversations with managers that have asked about him. I've told them he's a terrible human being and a terrible striker," Martin joked.

"I don't know what will happen. I genuinely don't (know) right now. We have spoken about our desire to keep him.

"I think there was so much transition and change at the club last year.

"There's no way Che should have been in the last year of his contract, but I don't blame anyone at the club currently. That is what it is.

"We have to avoid that happening again if we can. He will hopefully help us get to the Premier League and then everything will become clearer."
