There were clashes between the two sets of supporters amid a pitch invasion at St Mary’s on Friday night after Southampton booked their place in the Championship play-off final.

Saints beat West Bromwich Albion 3-1, with jubilant fans spilling onto the pitch after the end of the game.

Videos circulating on social media show the two opposing sets of fans being separated by stewards, and objects being thrown by both sides.

One Saints fan who attended the match said that he was almost hit by a bottle thrown from the away end.

Trouble flared when some fans who had invaded the pitch made their way to the end of the ground containing away supporters, PA reports.

Scuffles broke out and punches appeared to be thrown.

Fans were warned over the public address system and via a message on the screen that those entering the pitch could face police action.

The Saints victory, which followed up a goalless draw in the first leg at The Hawthorns last Sunday, books the club a place at Wembley next weekend.

They will face Leeds United, knowing a win will take them back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
