ARMED officers swooped on Southampton city centre after reports of a man wielding a gun.

Police units surrounded TK Maxx in the High Street following a call from a member of the public who claimed to have spotted two men arguing in Brinton’s Road, one of who was holding a handgun.

A man matching that description was seen going into the fashion store but when officers swooped, they discovered that the man had nothing to do with the earlier incident.

Armed units then headed to Brinton’s Road, where the argument happened at 4.30pm yesterday, and cordoned off the area before detaining a man.

It was unclear last night whether he had been armed.

Chief Inspector Duncan Weston, of Hampshire police, said: “The man is now helping us with our enquiries.”

After reading about the stabbing of 2 young men and armed officers rushing to a man reported to be wielding a gun, for a moment I thought I was reading the New York Times and this was happening in the Bronx not the Echo and our city centre, what is the world coming to?

Just be grateful this isn't the Bronx. You'd get this sort of thing about ten times a day.

I understand it happens more than we know - only a handful of incident make it to the press.

How many people would you like to call the police then, if you needed to call the police for whatever would you get others to call aswell, I doubt it.

Have a look at the on street gun battle that happened in Miami this week, fast cars, machine guns, fireballs and bodies everywhere, like a real life Bad Boys film.

spendid? Has your medication worn off, you don't normally make these errors, now on two posts at least you are making errors.
It is obvious that the Police have a standard response to certain incidents, it may seem over the top but they have no choice, you would be the first to crticise if it all went pear shaped.

One of *whom*. Tsk, tsk. See me after class. That's you, unnamed reporter, and the subeditor!

New York cleaned its act up years ago. Unlike Southampton.
