Vital equipment failed as doctors fought to save life

A grieving family have demanded answers after doctors battling to save the life of a Southampton woman during a cardiac arrest were hampered when the emergency equipment didn’t work properly.

Bosses at Southampton General Hospital have now overhauled practices surrounding vital resuscitation kit after a nurse had to run to another ward to find a functioning equipment while doctors tried to save the life of Hazel Ladbrooke.

Now the following an inquest in the 57-year-old’s death her family are demanding answers and have complained to hospital bosses.

You obviously know a lot about the hospital and its workings.
Personally speaking I cannot speak highly enough about it and the treatment I have received there. Two of my close friends have - on separate occasions - had cause to be admitted to the HDU and their treatment was first class.
Equipment is not infallible. The question is did this particular piece of equipment fail because it was not maintained correctly or was the failure due to something that could not have been expected? Let the experts investigate and decide what went wrong. Only then can the problem be put right.
My only complain about the hospital is the cost of parking.

maybe the parking charges you complain about could go towards the payment of new equipment for the likes of the h d u

If the SGH did not charge for parking or the fee was minimal that would anger more people.
Currently many of those who work at the hospital - and there are thousands of them - park off site.
If the staff parked on site, patients would find it extremely difficult to park there. Also, those who travel to the SGH by bus would be encouraged to use their cars, making the situation even worse.

Maybe the car parking charges could go towards new equipment, but I doubt very much that they do. Check where the money goes and you will see it is listed as paying for upkeep of the car park and security services. Anything left over is then paid into the fund for frontline services.
But try visiting a very sick friend or relative over a number of days and the cost is quite high. And unless you live in Southampton it isn't worth considering public transport unless you want to spend all day getting there and back.
Funds should be made available by the NHS for emergency equipment but this isn't always the case. It is no use blaming any particular political party because they are all as bad as one another. Unfortunately there are too many people taking from the system without putting anything in (and most of that can be laid squarely at the door of the previous government).

Blimey!!! Mistakes happen, equipment fails!

I don't think any party wether it be Labour or Monster Raving Loonies could have prevented a technical issue. These things happen. I'm glad we have the technology we have these days, many years ago half of us would be dead by now!

i'm sorry but you make it sound like a car failing the mot, there should be back up ie a spare set, these items are not generally large as the paramedic normally carries their kit, make the ambulance bigger or send a back up vehicle, i suggest taking the money out of the overseas aid budget or eu contributions

I agree derek if there is a power cut there are generators that kick in, we dont know exactly why this equipment failed and i know it happens, maybe now equipment may be checked more frequently

You know it's a maximum of £7 for 24hrs, as long as you're there as a patient or visiting one? I think a lot of people don't read the prices properly, and end up paying more than they need to.
