Man in court charged with murder of ex-policeman in Hampshire
3:49pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
A 49-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a retired police officer in Hampshire.
Stephen Cowdrey, of St Augustine Road, Southsea, Hampshire, was accused of killing 87-year-old Stanley Carter at his home in Greenwood Avenue, Cosham, Portsmouth, between September 11 and 16 when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court for a brief hearing.
He was remanded in custody and will next appear at Winchester Crown Court on Friday, a court spokeswoman said.
A post-mortem examination has been carried out to establish the cause of death but Hampshire police say they are not in a position to release the preliminary results and officers continue to appeal for information.
Mr Carter's body was found by police on Sunday night after officers received information about his death.
Cowdrey was arrested at Portsmouth central police station shortly afterwards.
