500 pupils evacuated in Hampshire school fire
FIREFIGHTERS have evacuated 500 pupils after a fire broke out in a Hampshire school's boiler room.
Six crews were scrambled to the blaze which spread to the roof space above the school's sports complex.
Crews used 10 breathing apparatuses, two hose reels, two jets, two compressed air foam jets and the aerial ladder platform to bring the fire under control.
All staff and students at Winton Secondary School in Andover, were accounted for and evacuated safely.
Dan Tasker, group manager for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: ''The first crews to arrive were met with a challenging situation of a confirmed fire plus the evacuation of 500 pupils.
''By using our compressed-air fire-fighting system, due to limited water supplies, the fire was suppressed sufficiently to allow additional resources to arrive and deal with this incident.
''The initial and subsequent crews worked diligently to prevent the fire from spreading to further parts of the school.''
He added that a full investigation would be held into the cause of the fire.
