Free music festival SO:FEST kicks off in Southampton
SUMMER might seem to be over but the festival season isn’t quite finished.
Tomorrow sees a music showcase come to Southampton – and what’s more, it’s free.
SO:FEST aims to showcase the strength of Southampton’s pop culture and local music scene.
It returns to the Guildhall Square after its launch last year, with other venues around the city.
It will run from noon to 9pm.
The event is run by Southampton Festivals in partnership with Southampton City Council, with support from sponsors and its media partner is the Daily Echo.
Charlie Hislop, of Southampton Festivals, said: “Southampton has a wealth of established touring and recording artists, while at least two of the younger acts we put on last year have got good recording deals since then, and if playing at SO:FEST helped, that’s great. Sometimes we could make more noise about what a great city this is.”
Local songwriter, performer and music producer Ben Goddard and his band will headline the event.
The beautifully-crafted pop songs that made him a hit at the festivals this summer will top a line-up that includes rock, ska, folk-punk, retro, and more on the main stage.
The rest of the all day programme includes The Lost Souls Club, Welcome Pariah, cover heroes Davy Jones’ Locker, and hard-working ska band The Skore. Fickle Friends follow popular local folkpunk singer Sean McGowan, and the show openers are upcoming youngsters Bother Goose. Legendary longlasting – and John Peel favourites, Accrington Stanley complete the line-up.
As well as live music on the main stage, the Frog and Parrot Chatterbox Stage will feature a variety of spoken word and acoustic music, and The Cellar Subtone stage will feature a programme of DJs.
There will also be some children’s activities and an arts market. The festival spirit is set to continue with local bars and venues hosting indoor events after the main event ends.#
