Fire alert on hovercraft causes delays between Ryde and Southsea
7:45am Monday 30th September 2013 in News
A FIRE emergency on board a hovercraft has caused delays for people travelling across the Solent today.
Fire crews were called to Hovertravel's base in Ryde at 9.15pm last night, after fire alarms on board one of its hovercraft ferries were set off.
The alarm set off the craft's sprinklers and the crews arrived five minutes later, but did not find any evidence of a fire.
Staff at Hovertravel said there was “no evidence” to suggest that a fire had taken place in the craft's starboard engine, where the alarm went off, but investigations are continuing.
The emergency means there will be some disruption to ferry services between Ryde and Southsea today, with the craft expected to be out of action until at least this evening.
