AN INQUEST into the death of Southampton man Del Singh has revealed he died from gunshot wounds in an Afghan terrorist attack.
The hearing was officially opened at Winchester’s coroner’s court yesterday during which the court heard the 39-year-old had been shot by insurgents – and was one of 21 people who died.
Barry Thomas, coroner’s officer, said: “A suicide bomber took out the gates to allow insurgents go into the compound and kill foreign nationals.”
A well-known figure in Southampton, Mr Singh had worked in international aid for more than ten years managing EU and UN projects as well as for the Department for International Development in the Middle East.
He worked in countries torn apart by war including Kosovo, Libya, Sudan and Afghanistan, but was also a passionate supporter of human rights in Palestine.
Del, who was a prospective Labour Member of the European Parliament, had been in Kabul working for Adam Smith International, an advisory firm at the time of his death.
The inquest was adjourned until July.
