Five generations of a family came together to celebrate a Hampshire couple’s 70th wedding anniversary.

Ivy and Henry Shillabeer from Southampton celebrated their platinum wedding with a bash on Saturday.

They were joined by their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren to mark the occasion at the Woolston Club.

Former Co-operative baker and General Motors production worker Ivy, 88, and former car paint sprayer Henry, 91, tied the knot at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Portswood in 1944. The couple have lived in Southampton all their lives, and currently live in Bassett.

Ivy said: “We’ve been extremely lucky.

“We’ve never had a lot of money, but we have travelled and we have had quite a good life and have a great family.”

And when asked what the secret of their marriage’s longevity was, she said: “I think it’s tolerance.

“I’m not going to say we have never had an argument, but we have never really had any cause for a serious disagreement."
