A pair of elderly people have been rescued from a bog in the New Forest.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called out at 4.54pm this afternoon to Smugglers Road car park in Burley after reports that a couple were stuck in the mud after going out for walk.  

Two helicopters are in the sky this evening to help locate the stricken pensioners and help in their rescue.

A spokesman for HFRS said the pair were freed at around 6.10pm and both appeared to be unharmed.

She said: "We rescued two casualties from the bog and both are now with South Central Ambulance Service although they appear to be fit and well."

Two appliances attended from Burley and Ringwood while special equipment vehicles were also on the scene including one from Eastleigh, two from Fareham and one from Lyndhurst.

In total 25 firefighters attended the incident.

Burley resident Simon Rowley said: “They are loads of police and emergency vehicles. I have heard two people are stuck in the bog and the rescue people are going out to get them.”

He said that the car park was packed with ambulances plus fire and rescue teams from Burley, Eastleigh and Ringwood.
