A FAST food restaurant in Southampton closed after “unsatisfactory” levels of cleaning were identified during an inspection.

Council environmental health officers visited the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) branch in Portswood Road on Monday to carry out a routine inspection of the premises.

A spokesman for the council said that the inspection uncovered “unsatisfactory levels of cleaning in the premises, including in the food preparation areas.”

He added: “KFC management decided to close the restaurant voluntarily in order to undertake cleaning before reopening later in the day.

“No formal action was taken by Southampton City Council at the time.”

A further visit did not uncover any other problems, and the council says cleanliness and hygiene levels will be monitored closely.

The spokesman added: “If satisfactory standards are not maintained then the council’s environmental health team will have no alternative but to consider formal action.”

A spokesperson for KFC said: "Health and hygiene are of the utmost importance to us, and our Portswood restaurant received a 'Scores on the Doors' rating of four stars on its most recent formal inspection, so to ensure we maintain its high standards we voluntarily closed for two hours on Monday to address some potential concerns.

"After we were satisfied that our high standards were being upheld, the store was reopened to customers the same day, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused."

lets put this perspective there were a couple of problems in hygiene, the fact it wasnt an immediate risk to the public and it was a voluntary closure rather than enfocement. Some one or more than one person did not follow the cleaning schedule correctly which caused the issue to occur. The Sensational headline portrayed here by the echo is stupid say the least, Ive no doubt that some of you on here me included may not clean our kitchens as well as we could.

Totton Restaurant Fined Over Food Hygiene

A New Forest restaurant has been fined £13,500 for having dirty kitchens, store rooms and toilets.

The restaurant Gandhi Indian Cuisine has been fined as a result of food hygiene and safety offences found by New Forest District Council food safety officers.

The restaurant at 52 Commercial Road, Totton, received a routine food hygiene inspection in June 2013. Officers found the premises and equipment to be dirty and a mouldy cooked curry was found in a kitchen fridge, which the court heard was unfit for human consumption.

The inspection of the premises also revealed that the equipment and structure of the kitchen, dry goods room and toilet were unacceptably dirty. Dirt was found on the walls and floors as well as taps, electrical switches, cooker knobs and door handles, which could have led to cross contamination of foods. Food debris was found on refrigerator shelving and hand-washing soap had not been provided in the kitchen.

Officers revisited the premises on two further occasions in June 2013 and noted some cleaning had been done, however the standards of cleaning still did not meet the legal minimum standard.

Prosecution in this case was considered appropriate because the business had a blatant disregard for the law and was not maintaining the minimum legal standards. Despite officers requesting works to satisfy food law requirements, they found continuing unacceptable conditions.

Gandhi Indian Cuisine (Totton) Ltd pleaded guilty to eight food hygiene offences at Southampton Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 7 January 2014. They were fined a total of £13,500 and ordered to pay costs of £2,922.02.

Councillor Edward Heron, New Forest District Council's portfolio holder for the environment, said:

"It is New Forest District Council's policy to adopt an educative and persuasive role in relation to enforcing food safety law. Formal action was necessary in this case due to the serious nature of the offences.''

Concerns about food hygiene matters in the New Forest can be reported to Environmental Health Services by phoning 023 8028 5230.

How dare you suggest that I'm advocating prejudice based upon the colour of a person's skin!!!
It's quite demonstrative of your lack of education that you seem to believe that only Western European and British people have white skin, by the way.
NOT, of course, that skin colour comes into the equation at all, since I regard anyone who was born in Britain, whether their skin be black, brown, pink or purple with green dots to be just as British as myself!!
As for the legions of whiners on cruise ships - the novovirus is an inescapable product of people living in such claustrophobic conditions, and no amount of nanny-state hand-sterilising procedures will ever eradicate that - and they should get a life!!!
I don't expect for a moment that you're man enough to apologise for your insinuation that I am some sort of "racist", so I won't hold my breath!

Firstly, how do you know that the employees at the KFC in question weren't, according to your definition, British or Western European? Secondly, you're clearly advocating prejudice prejudice because you're suggesting, on the basis of no evidence whatsoever, that people who aren't, according to your definition, British or Western European (including, therefore, Americans, Canadians, and Poles) are more likely to run unclean restaurants than those who are.

funny i come across this news article, was only this evening before reading this that i took a trip to the KFC in Millbrook, and apon going through the drive thru i happen to look out my window down at the ground where a storage room doorway was and were disgusted with seeing the remains of chicken, chips etc with what looked like been brushed out from that room, all i can say is this hadnt just happened as the remains looked days old and even the bottom of the doors show signs of built up grime over a long period, at this point i didnt even feel like ordering food as put me right off. this is a complete lack of hygine and can now see why they have rat traps surronding the drive thru. KFC will be getting a call from me tomorrow for sure, can i just mention that this particular drive thru is absolutely rubbish for speed to the customers....40 mins i was stuck in it the other day and its not like you can reverse out of it is it with cars behind you. 25 mins waited tonight......fast food my arse.

By only British and Western European you mean "white people"? If so then that's no better as this demographic is always responsible for outbreaks of norovirus on cruise ships thigh they then blame cruising companiesbut it's the British and western European passengers who fail to wash their hands aftergoing to the toilet hence the same would be the case in KFC or McDonald's or Burger King etc. A very very silly comment by you .
How dare you suggest that I'm advocating prejudice based upon the colour of a person's skin!!! Firstly, how do you know that the employees at the KFC in question weren't, according to your definition, British or Western European? Unlike you, members of the BNP at least have the courage their convictions.
Firstly - have you ever had the misfortune to frequent the KFC in Portswood? If you have, you'll know exactly what I'm alluding to.

Secondly, don't bring your beloved warmongering USA into this.

Thirdly, don't hold up the political irrelevance that is the BNP as a paragon of virtue and honesty.

The rest of your drivel has been binned, unread.

You're a fool, Harrison. End of.

I felt the headline was a sensationalist. The council identified an issue, the restaurant acted swiftly to correct a mistake, all seems well.

Heck, anyone can make a mistake, and the cleanliness criteria for kitchens is very strict, I doubt many domestic kitchens would pass, and yet we don't complain about them.

No, I think the KFC should be applauded for taking action, and forgiven for what was obviously a minor oversight, if it had been anything more serious the council would have acted more strongly.

last time we had a meal from this restaurant there was a hair in more than one bit of the chicken.
Not one of the secret ingredients I hope!
I suspect it was from the manager who packed our meal, the only one not wearing a hat or hair net.
But accidents do happen I suppose. At least there wasn't a battered beak in the box!
