A second Southampton community radio station has been nominated for a top diversity award.

Unity 101, based in St Mary’s Road, is one of Hampshire’s leading Asian and ethnic community radio stations and has been nominated in the National Diversity Awards.

It was nominated by its own supporters, who believe that Unity 101 has positively contributed to community cohesion in Southampton.

Unity 101 joins another Southampton community radio station, Awaaz, based in Cranbury Terrace, which has also been nominated in the awards.

Since having its permanent community radio licence granted nine years ago, Unity 101 has been going from strength to strength, and it broadcasts on FM, online and smartphones in ten languages.

The station works with five schools and colleges in Southampton, and has acted as a link between various faith groups in Southampton.

In one of its flagships shows called Faith on Sunday, four of the main faiths in the city – Christian, Islam, Hindu and Sikh – discuss themes like family, health, respect and community to strengthen understanding of each faith.

Ram Kalyan Kelly, project and station manager for Unity 101 Community Radio, said: “We are delighted to have been nominated for the National Diversity Award, however there is still a long way to go in order to be in with a chance of winning.

“To make the shortlist we need as many votes as possible, so we’re asking people to vote for us if they believe that Unity 101 shows great devotion to our community and is contributing to more equality, diversity and inclusion in our city.”

The nominations close on July 18, after which a shortlist will be chosen and the winners will be announced at a glitzy awards ceremony in London on September 26.
