More mums-to-be in Southampton are smoking

Daily Echo: More mums-to-be in Southampton are smoking More mums-to-be in Southampton are smoking

MORE pregnant women are smoking more in Southampton than in most of the south, new figures have revealed.

A study by the Health and Social Care Information Centre revealed that 16.4 per cent of women smoked while pregnant between April 2013 and March this year.

Of the 3,361 pregnancies delivered in Southampton, 551 mothers smoked, which is second in the Hampshire and wider Wessex area only to NHS Dorset, which had 906 smokers from 7,359 pregnancies.

It also comes as the national average of smoking mothers has dropped in the past year from 12.7 per cent to 12 per cent.

As revealed by the Daily Echo earlier this year, smoking costs the city council a massive £75m per year, including £2m spent on picking up fag ends.

Of that total, an estimated £15.9m is from workers taking smoke breaks and £13.7m for sick days relating to tobacco.

But Southampton City Council has launched the Making Southampton a Smoke Free City: Tobacco Control Plan after signing up to the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control, an initiative signed by 50 councils to better protect residents’ health from smoking.

The Daily Echo has already revealed how new anti-smoking signs are being erected in outdoor children’s play areas as part of the Making Southampton a Smoke-Free City initiative.

This year’s figure for Southampton is less than last, but by only 0.2 per cent.

Meanwhile, the Isle of Wight has the worst percentage of pregnant smokers in the region at 18.4 per cent, or 241 women out of 1,308 pregnancies.

Anyone looking for help to quit smoking can contact Solent NHS Trust's Southampton Quitters on 023 8051 5221.

Being born in the early 70's when smoking was deemed as acceptable, both my parents smoked and i'm sure many of the commenters on here are in the same position.

I'm not saying it's a good thing to smoke whilst pregnant as any decent parent would do anything possible to ensure their child is bought up healthy.

I guess my point is many of us have been bought up around smokers when it was deemed acceptable and it did many of us no harm.

Smoking may have been acceptable all those years ago.. But today we have done research and have many facts about the dangers, so there's no excuse really!! I think it's completely selfish to smoke whilst pregnant. You may want to fill your body with toxins but don't inflict that onto a healthy innocent child!!

What do you think of the idea that the BMA supports, of introducing an absolute ban on the sale of tobacco products to anyone born in the year 2000 and beyond?

I can see that there's arguments on both sides, but I think we have to try to find a way to get this killer product banned somehow over time. I remember that many people protested when tobacco was banned in pubs and restaurants etc., but that is now generally considered to have been a good thing. I'm interested to know what you and other posters think.

To a point I sympathise with the mothers. If you got the addiction it can be hard to go cold turkey or quit straight away and the stress of doing so could be just as harmful to the baby. However their are those who just don't care at all and it those that should be made aware of the affects that smoking can cause their child.

In an ideal world though I'd just like to say ban these Cancer sticks all together. It's a disgusting habit and a quick temporary fix to the stress and strains of life to which we should actually tackle in more healthier ways.

If not a ban then why not start charging smokers for all smoke related illnesses. Give them a bill for doctors visits, treatments from the mild illnesses to the terminal ones. Maybe even add a nhs contribution as well as tax to the cost of these death sticks.

Females who smoke during pregnancy are overwhelmingly from the lowest social class. Fact.
You put stuff on here purely to demonstrate that you consider yourself to be a superior being, yet it is an anonymous website, so no one knows , or cares, who you are.
And of course that has been said anyway, and it'll only draw further fatuous abuse.
Why do I bother?

Comments are often made about social class for reasons of bigotry rather than fact - it has been known for years that 'inverse health care' plays a part what is that? To encourage some to at least try and research before spouting off the ' I read a headline' so it must be true! So look it up.

"Inverse" has a meaning. "Health care" has a meaning. Combined they have no more meaning than "tautological omnibus" for example. "Bigot" is invariably used by the left of those who do not share their dogma. Try again.
