Alzheimer’s Society is calling for more volunteers in Portsmouth, to support the estimated 2,220 people living with dementia in the city.

Alzheimer’s Society is dedicated to leading the fight against dementia, as well as improving the lives of people affected by the condition.

But to do this, more volunteers are needed to fulfil a range of roles including befriending and helping at the charity’s flagship fundraising event, Memory Walk.

An annual event, Memory Walk last year raised £25,000 and this year the charity hope to exceed this.

Volunteer roles for Memory Walk can include route marshaling, stall holding, registering walkers or even giving out medals at the end of the day, as well as an army of people needed to help set up and take down on the day.

A recruitment event is being held by Alzheimer’s Society at the Oasis Centre in Portsmouth on July 14 between 11am and 2pm for anyone wishing to find out more about volunteering.

Local staff will be on hand to offer more information on the range of roles available.

Natalie Bettinson, community fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society, said: “Without volunteers we wouldn't be able to hold our Portsmouth Memory Walk. Volunteers are integral in organising and planning the walk as well as helping on the day.

‘Being a Memory Walk volunteer is a fantastic way to support Alzheimer's Society as the money raised will help us to continue vital services for people with dementia today and search for a cure for tomorrow. It's also great way to meet new people, learn new skills plus it's a fantastic day out”.

As well as the Memory Walk Volunteer role, the Society is looking for local people to become Volunteer Befrienders.

The Befriending service provides personalised companionship for people with dementia, either in their own home or during outings and activities in the community.

This could include support to continue hobbies and personal interests, support to participate in leisure and social activities, support to carry out regular activities such as shopping and general companionship.
