Marks & Spencer boss Marc Bolland blamed website teething problems today as the chain's homeware and clothing division registered its 12th quarter in a row of declining sales.

The general merchandise arm posted a 1.5% fall in like-for-like sales for the 13 weeks to June 28 - making it three straight years of quarterly declines for the division - while food grew like-for-like sales by 1.7%.

The group's total revenues for the period grew 2.3%, though the business said sales were hampered by teething problems after the introduction of a new website earlier this year.

Chief executive Mr Bolland said: ''We have seen a continued improvement in clothing, although as anticipated the settling in of the new M&S.com site has had an impact on sales.''

The figures were announced hours before Mr Bolland and the rest of the board are due to face concerned shareholders at M&S's AGM at Wembley Stadium.

I went to M&S at West Quay to buy a pair of men's shorts - ideal summer wear. The style I liked was unavailable in my size across three different colours. Four days later I went back there, thinking that stock was sure to have been replenished by then. I was out of luck again.

If M&S is so poor with its stock control, it is hardly surprising that sales continue to decline.

I did manage to get the shorts but only by ordering them online from M&S.

southy.... a growing economy has nothing to do with a shop that can stock correct sizes or decent styles.... their situation is purely one business strategic failure. If you think retails sales in all shops are pegged to the economy in general then you are either stupid or stupid.

Also, their web sales site is an absolute disaster. This was also admitted this morning when their 2nd 1/4 results were revealed. Website is unfriendly and difficult. Typical of I.T. folks who are made and think totally differently than joe public. It is a shambles.

Very true forest and like i said theres is not the only one that is declining in sales.

street it as every thing to do with stores and on-line sales thats what makes an economy, if things are not selling means the economy is in a down turn, people are not buying

Your rather childlike logic can easily be countered by the boom year that Rolls-Royce has just had which shows the economy is growing nicely. Any luck with finding the page numbers of the Lisbon Treaty or are you going to keep a low profile for a few days and hope that I'll forget?
