A pensioner died from his injuries months after being hit by a moped in Thailand, an inquest heard.

Ronald Edward Webb suffered serious head injuries when he stepped into the path of the vehicle on January 20 this year.

The inquest heard how he was treated in two Thai hospitals for almost two months before he was transferred to Southampton General Hospital in March.

However, the 86-year-old, of Bitterne Crescent, Southampton, later died after failing to recover from his injuries.

An inquest heard how Mr Webb travelled to Thailand in 2012 leaving his estranged wife Georgette in the UK.

Mrs Webb told the Southampton inquest how she had been looking for her husband since 2013 but received an e-mail from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirming Mr Webb had been involved in a collision.

The inquest heard how he was treated at the Banglamung Hospital for a number of injuries, including a head injury, bruising of the lungs, a fracture of the left wrist, and pneumonia.

He was later transferred to Sirikit Naval Hospital, where he received medical care due to his history in the military.

But he returned to the UK on March 19 where his treatment continued at Southampton General Hospital.

Prof James Nicholl, professor of neuropathology at the hospital, told the inquest: “He had a number of infections that were difficult to treat with antibiotics.

“He was very confused at that stage and went downhill until he died on April 30.”

He said his post-mortem found he was suffering from bronchial pneumonia, bruising of the brain, a urine tract infection and extensive bed sores.

Mrs Webb told the inquest they had a difficult relationship but praised staff at Southampton General Hospital for the care they gave her husband before he died.

Southampton coroner Graeme Short said Mr Webb died from bronchial pneumonia as a result of the long-term effects of a head injury.

He told the inquest: “When someone has an accident and then returns to this country, I have no powers to require the Thai authorities provide information.

“For all I know there was no police investigation into the incident in which Mr Webb sustained his injuries.”
