SHE was born on the eve of the Great War.
Britain was just days away from declaring war on Germany when Doris Wilson made her entrance into the world.
Doris looked back on her long life as she celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at the Hampshire nursing home where she lives.
She was born in Southsea and worked at a drapery store in her youth.
After getting married she and her husband Herbert moved to Malta, where they endured the famine that ravaged the island during the Second World War.
At one point, residents had to survive on nothing more than a few scraps of bread each day.
The couple came back to the UK and lived in Lancashire before returning to Southsea in the mid-1960s.
Herbert, an engineer, retired in 1970 and died ten years later aged 69.
Doris lived with their daughter Pamela in Holbury, before moving to Colbury House nursing home Calmore, three years ago.
