A MAN who launched an unprovoked and sustained attack using part of a pickaxe on a man has been jailed for six years.

John Berry, 32, hit Thomas Appleton numerous times in a savage assault on a suburban street, Winchester Crown Court heard.

A doctor said it was surprising that Mr Appleton did not suffer a fractured skull in the attack in Moss Road, Winnall, Winchester, on March 22.

Tom Wright, prosecuting, said Mr Appleton, 31, a mechanic, was taking a cake to his 76-year-old grannie at around 9am.

He reversed his car off the road and so impeded a van driven by Berry, causing an exchange of words and gestures, said Mr Wright.

After delivering the cake Mr Appleton returned to his car to find Berry waiting for him with the pickaxe handle. After asking Appleton if he thought he was “hard” he struck him on the head with the handle.

Berry went on to hit him at least ten times on the left hand side of his body, “systematically working up the side of his body from the ankle to his head.”

Mr Wright said: “He went to the floor. He remembers hearing his 76-year-old grandmother screaming 'stop'. Mr Appleton is not clear why Berry stopped. A car may have passed. Or the grandmother screaming for him to break off the assault.”

Mr Appleton was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and needed numerous stitches for a jagged wound on his scalp.

Mr Wright said the doctor said Mr Appleton was “incredibly lucky. He would not have been surprised by a fractured skull or inter-cranial bleed.”

On arrest Berry told the police: “I did hit him. I should have gone home.”

Berry, of Spitfire End, Winnall, admitted assault causing grievous bodily harm. He was also told to pay a £120 victim surcharge.

No, because none of the people involved were from Chilworth or where the murder took place. It's just where they decided to dispose of the body.

That's not quite correct actually but I guess you were trying to make a point so why let the truth get in the way :)

What wasn't true about what I wrote? The victim and culprits were from either Shirley or Bevois valley. No one involved was from Chilworth.

It is correct. The Albanian Drug dealer lived just off the Avenue in Southampton, it was found that he was murdered in a flat and later burned in the Mercedes in Chilworth

poor man, really hope he makes a full recovery, cant imagine the pain of what he went through. Also his poor nan watching on. Hope this john berry, A K A scum bag has time now to realise what a waste of space he is, very worrying he only got six years, for this vicious assault, probably out in three years, to do it all again.

I bet the only reason Berry's van was impeded is because he drove like a tosser.

6 years and £120 fine - if this wasn't attempted murder I don't know what is.

Courts here are as soft as my first solid passing and it makes me sick. Sod the plea, sod the tears, sod the admittance that he should have went home. Nobody hits a man with a pick axe handle - essentially a miniature 2x4 - TEN TIMES no less, and expects them to be ok.

Utter scum bag. Anyone reading this who thinks "Good on him" and I know there will be as I know Southampton, you're all scum bags also and you deserve to be locked away. Thinking this is ok is the same as doing it in my opinion.
