A SOUTHAMPTON pub could be crowned the best in Britain.

The Rockstone, in Bevois Valley, has beaten competition from hundreds of watering holes across the south to scoop the best cider bar/pub and best spirits awards in the Great British Pub Awards 2014, south-east and London region.

Now staff hope they could win the title of best overall pub.

It is the second year in a row The Rockstone has been selected.

In 2013 the popular pub won the best cask beer pub in the south-east and London region.

Landlord Max Greenwood said: β€œThis is testament to all the work we are putting in and it will make a lot of people very happy.”

Excellent news, well done to Max & his team.
This is the model of what a well run business can do in tough times, the place is always heaving, friendly & the smells that come through our kitchen window are awesome.
Well done to all concerned for doing such a great job :)

Food is OK, if you like burgers as that's pretty much all there is on the menu, and it's very very expensive for what it is. It is definitely a gastro pub, nice enough but I would go there for a drink because there would be nowhere to sit.

Well, thanks guys, much appreciated!

On the burgers note, we actually have 10 starters and 15 mains that aren't burgers.

About 5-8 daily specials, 4-6 homemade desserts that change twice a week.

About 30% of the menu is vegetarian and we offer vegan and gluten free options on all our our burgers.

But you're quite right about the seating, though we have two gardens that you can sit in and have added new indoor seating too.

We just always seem to be busy!

Who will you be defying when you book? Is someone evil trying to prevent you from eating out in pubs?

I went one lunch time with friends. After looking at the menu we had an all day breakfast which we thought was expensive, but when it came it was huge and well worth the money as it was at least twice the size of any I had had before. The only downside was that we had ordered chips as we expected it to be smallish, but we were stuffed. It was a brilliant meal that was well worth the money.

Seriously if you have been here and don't like the place why in the blue hel would you click onto a story about it receiving an award?!

It has an excellent selection of beer but whenever I've been in there, there's never anywhere to sit so feels like being at a real ale festival having to stand up drinking.
