AN elderly Hampshire woman is in a serious condition in hospital after she was hit by a car when she was riding her mobility scooter on a pedestrian crossing.

Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses who saw what they described as a “low-speed incident” today in Bridge Road, Park Gate, near the junction with Middle Road.

The 86-year-old mobility scooter rider is said to be in a serious condition, but police would not provide details of what injuries she had suffered.

The female driver of a Honda CR-V, was described as upset but unhurt.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said that a rapid response vehicle with an ambulance crew treated the pensioner at the scene before she was taken to Southampton General Hospital.

The collision happened just before 10am.

Police shut the road for three hours while they investigated the incident.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Eastern Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Gallant.
