A HAMPSHIRE register office is set to relocate, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Winchester Register Office is moving from the city’s railway station to council offices. Its current location on Station Hill has been the office for more than 20 years but it is earmarked for demolition as part of a redevelopment.

The city and county council is looking to revamp the Station Approach-Andover Road area with new offices and homes.

The county council wants to provide a new register office at Castle Hill and has revamped the Basing Room.

A public consultation is due to be held later this year.

The register office at the railway station is also still being used for ceremonies.

County council leader Cllr Roy Perry said: “The cobbled avenue to the Great Hall provides a perfect backdrop for couples using the new ceremony venue in The Basing Room which also features the beautiful chandelier from the Petersfield Register Office.”

The improved facilities at Castle Hill, supported by the income generated from the service, will complement the full range of registration services provided to the public.

The proposed move is part of the county’s office rationalisation called ‘Workstyle’, which is reducing running costs by a quarter, cutting floorspace by over a third, and generating around £15million through the sale of buildings that are no longer needed.

Cllr Perry added: “This is on top of the £2million in annual revenue savings made by this more intensive and efficient use of buildings. All of the money generated is reinvested into improving other offices and public spaces, and giving customers better environments within which to receive a face-to-face service.”
