AN investigation is today underway after a prisoner was rescued from a burning cell at Winchester Prison in the early hours.

The inmate was dragged from his room by prison officers after the blaze broke out in the Romsey Road prison at 3.13am this morning.

He was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

Now an investigation is underway into how the fire broke out.

Crews from Winchester and Eastleigh fire stations used a two sets of breathing apparatus and a hose reel to put out the flames.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said no other prisoners needed to be evacuated.

It is not known how much damage was caused.

A Prison Service spokesperson said:"A small cell fire was quickly extinguished in the early hours of this morning at HMP Winchester.

"One prisoner was taken to hospital for precautionary checks and is now back in the prison.

"The emergency services were called to the prison, as is standard practice, and police are now investigating the incident."
