AWARD-winning broadcaster Dan Snow is championing a new campaign by Hampshire Cultural Trust to promote the county’s “world-class” assets.

Dan, best known as the presenter of Battlefield Britain and other TV shows about the nation’s military heritage, has thrown his support behind the trust’s work.

In a film shown at an event in Winchester the |36-year-old historian urged everyone present to back the organisation.

Dan, who lives in the New Forest, said: “Hampshire Cultural Trust’s vital work can only continue with your support and contributions. Together we can not only safeguard but also develop our vibrant cultural scene.”

More than 100 invited guests gathered at the Grade II listed Winchester Discovery Centre in Jewry Street to learn about the trust’s role.

They included the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire Lindsay Fox, Mayor of Winchester Cllr Eileen Berry, and the chairman of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Colin Davidovitz.

More than 20 venues across the county are |operated by the trust, including Bursledon Windmill, Eastleigh Museum and Rockbourne Roman Villa.

In the film Dan said: “Hampshire Cultural Trust’s championship of our county world-class culture will be witnessed by a million people who will interact with the trust each year, enjoying the performances, discovering great works of art, learning new skills and understanding our culture.

“It will make a difference to the lives of thousands of people working, living and visiting the county.”

Guests were given a rare opportunity to view Jane Austen’s silk pelisse coat, with its ornate pattern of gold oak leaves.

The coat was handed down through the author’s family until 1993, when it was given to the county museums service.

Janet Owen, the trust’s chief executive officer, said: “This evening has given up the opportunity to set in front of the county’s major players the vital work Hampshire Cultural Trust has been entrusted with and to invite guests to give their support by becoming founding ambassadors.”

The trust’s chairman, Alan Lovell, added: “The response to our plans has been astounding.”
