POLICE are today investigating after a man was left fighting for life after being run over by a car at the bottom of the driveway of a Hampshire home.

The 36-year-old is understood to have been hit by a BMW convertible car as he lay on the pavement outside a house.

The dramatic incident left a Shirley Warren road closed as police, fire and paramedics descended on Saturday evening.

He was then rushed to Southampton General Hospital in a critical condition.

It is understood the man was returning from a night out and somehow came to be lying on the pavement when the car returned to a family home and struck him.

An ambulance and police were called to the scene and rushed him to hospital for treatment.

Last night friends of the man told how they witnessed what happened as they walked along Warren Avenue just after 10pm on Saturday night.

One man, who asked not be named, said: “We are so worried about him.

“We just hope he is okay as he was in a bad way.

“The ambulance and the police were here so quickly and they did everything they could do to try and save him.”

Daily Echo:

The family of the driver were too upset to speak to the Echo but confirmed that the victim was lying down on the pavement at the bottom of the driveway and said he was barely visible as he was wearing dark clothing.

Sarah Yorke, landlady of the Ice House pub in Warren Avenue, saw the commotion.

She said: “There were sirens, four or five police cars, an ambulance and two fire engines.

“Police cordoned off the road and no one was allowed down there.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “I didn't see the incident but saw sirens and police everywhere.”

A spokeswoman for Hampshire police said he was in a “life threatening condition” and added: “He was injured after he lay down in a private driveway and was struck by a vehicle returning to the address.

“No arrests have been made and police are continuing with investigations.”

Crews from Redbridge fire station were initially called to the scene to help emergency services.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said: “We got to reports of a person who had been hit by a car, we sent an ambulance crew and ambulance officer to the scene “They assessed and treated one patient who sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.”
