WAR Horse author Michael Morpurgo and horse Joey, the puppet star of the theatrical sensation, have launched a new exhibition about the role horses played during the Great War.

They were given an enthusiastic reception by young artists from Priestlands School, who have contributed to the exhibition and were thrilled to meet their favourite author at St Barbe Museum in Lymington.

Home Lad Home: The War Horse Story marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and takes a deeper look behind the National Theatre’s ground-breaking production, which is currently playing to packed houses at the Mayflower Theatre.

It follows horses from peacetime occupation to the Remount Depots and active service.

The exhibition runs until April 26.
