ROAD safety campaigners fighting to make an accident blackspot in Southampton safer are celebrating after forcing a meeting with council safety chiefs.

Residents living near South East Road and Kathleen Road in Sholing handed in two petitions to make the notorious junction safer.

It has seen numerous crashes since 2011 after Southampton City Council changed the priorities there in 2011 so that people travelling from South East Road have right of way rather than the other way round.

Now a community meeting with Sholing ward councillor Dan Jeffrey and representatives from Balfour Beatty will discuss ways to make the junction safer.

It comes after the petition to make the junction safer got more than 450 signatures.

Campaigner David Poore, 30, from South East Road, said he had seen nearly 30 accidents in the last two years.

He said: “It is a volatile crossing which is dangerous for both pedestrians and car drivers. No-one has a clue who has the right of way and there are lots of crashes and shunts here as people stop very suddenly.”

“I have seen cars hit my front garden and even my house. It is only a matter of time before someone is killed here.”

Mr Poore welcomed the meeting and added: “I think this is stage one to get the council to listen and take on board what everyone is saying.”

“I urge everyone living nearby to come to the meeting. Hopefully this will mean the end to the dangerous junction.

Councillor for Sholing Ward Dan Jeffrey said that the junction has been one of the most talked about issues in the area.

He said: “The status quo does not seem to be working and it is not fair on the residents and they need to be listened to.

“We have to improve the relationship with the residents and the council on this. I want to get everyone in the room to find a solution to make this junction safer.”

The meeting will take place at St Marys Church Hall in St Monica’s Road tonight at 6.30pm.
