HAMPSHIRE’S county bridge club has been recognised as a registered charity as it continues its fight to have the pastime recognised as a sport.

The Charity Commission has recognised the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Contract Bridge Association (HIWCBA) as the first county bridge club to be as a registered charity strengthening, the English Bridge Union’s argument about the social benefit of this mental activity.

HIWCBA chairman Andy Hughes said: “I am delighted at this news. It will enable us to bring bridge to more people. Bridge is an enthralling activity that can be enjoyed by all, it is a great leveller mixing people from all walks of life and all ages. It is wonderful to see an 80-year-old competing on equal terms with a 16-year old.”
