A WASTE management specialist based in Hampshire is to train each one of its 50 tipper and grab drivers in road cycle and motorbike awareness as part of a nationally accredited scheme.

The TJ Group, which has a base in Winchester and HQ in Fareham, is keen to ensure its 135 staff are safe behind the wheel and can operate cab sensor equipment to prevent accidents.

According to industry figures lorry drivers are involved in more than 4,000 cyclist and pedestrian deaths across Europe each year. Fatalities among cyclists in the UK reached 118 two years ago alone.

The TG drivers are already pretty good, as a motorcyclist I see at least a couple every day, unlike some other 'waste' firms whose drivers appear to be on a productivity or early finish bonus...

I have to mostly agree but very slightly disagree, most of TJ's drivers are very good but one or two of their drivers don't have the standard of driving that's expected of them but I will add that TJ take a firm stance on employee's driving standards when recieving reports that the standard of an employee's driving has fallen below what it should be, even if the report is from a cyclist, still FAR, FAR superior to Dudman group, who when I reported one their drivers to them for passing dangerously close to me(close enough that I could have touched the truck), they had the boss, Steve Dudman email back to me with abuse and trying to blame me for being 1 meter from the curb to avoid cr@p road surface and large puddles that could have been hiding potholes but I must admit, it's EXTREMELY rare that I have problems with TJ vehicles, can go a very long time without incident.
