College bands to compete to perform at Ageas Bowl

Daily Echo: Craig David - one of Hampshire's finest musical talents. Craig David - one of Hampshire's finest musical talents.

CRAIG David, Band of Skulls, Alt-J, and Frank Turner – just some of the talented bands and artists Hampshire has produced over the years.

Now the most exciting musicians from colleges across the region will battle it out to play at a major sporting event at Southampton Solent University’s Solent Sound Competition.

A total of 11 acts will compete at the annual event today and tomorrow to win a stadium support slot during a T20 cricket match at the Ageas Bowl – home of Hampshire cricket club.

The event will be filmed in front of a live audience and judged by a panel of industry experts including A&R manager Giles Stanley, writer and music producer Paul Statham, and Prof Paul Rutter, programme group leader for popular music at the university.

The colleges taking part in the region include Itchen College, Richard Taunton College, and Fareham College. The musicians have received guidance throughout the year from student mentors on the popular music performance and popular music production degree courses.

Other prizes up for grabs include support slots at The Joiners in St Mary’s, Southampton, and a day in the university’s industrystandard recording studios.

The competition is free to attend and doors open at 4.45pm on both days.

Event organiser Chris Jackson said: “We’re passionate about nurturing talent at Solent University.

“This is just one example of the innovative partnership projects we run with local schools and colleges.”

Well if he's that talented where is he now? Oh yeah, he's gone off to the good old US of A , must be easier to get a job in McDonald's over there.
At least Band of Skulls are blessed with real talent and can actually play instruments and compose real songs not like that warbling wannabe berk who's had his five minutes of fame, never to be heard of again!

Oh man you're one of them!

Craig David can write, perform and produce his own songs. Not the greatest musician but an artist nonetheless. He has shown it in the past and his accolades speak for themselves along with his millions of albums and singles sold. His debut was voted the 2nd Best Album of All Time behind Thriller - You don't get to where he is and achieve what he has without talent.

Food for thought - Your taste in an individual's music has utterly no bearing on their level of talent. I can't stand Band of Skulls. They're still very talented. I'm just not that narrow minded as to think that my opinion deciphers talent or not.

Seems you have virtually no knowledge of music, and I can prove it.
Talent does not equate to longevity, especially not now. Given the low barrier for entry to the music industry these days, thanks mostly to technology, the sheer number of artists competing for our attentions is massive. Gone are the days of the decades-spanning superpower musical acts, short and sweet is the name of the game these days. But since you asked, he toured last year. Where are The Beatles now? I guess they can't be all that since they haven't done anything in years, right?

I for one don't care for Craig David's music, but to write him off as talentless demonstrates a phenomenal lack of insight. Especially if it's based on "where is he now?" But let's talk about that:

Craig David's career took of in 1999, and he toured last year. That's 14 years so far, simply by looking at recording material. Band of Skulls were formed in 2004, and released nothing at all until 2009. At that's at best a 10 year career, or a five year one if we're measuring it against David's.

David has won dozens of music awards, and had three albums go platinum or multi-platinum globally. Band of Skulls were, oh right yeh, one of their songs was in 'Guitar Hero'. Big whoop. I'm not seeing them retire to Miami on the proceeds of that any time soon.

Seems to me that by any quantifiable measure of success, Craig David eats your precious local indie band for breakfast.

Food for thought.

I'm not convinced they're all that talented. The scene is awash with mediocre indie acts that think they're something special because they can string a few chords together. I don't see Band of Skulls as doing anything particularly out of the ordinary.

Everybody will instantly recognise several of David's songs. There's a reason for that: it takes a damned sight more talent to create a good, catchy pop song than most people realise. Any idiot can learn enough guitar to bash out some formulaic rock songs that will be the match of Band of Skulls' best offerings.
