A CAR has been 'totally destroyed' after it exploded on the motorway this afternoon.

The Vauxhall Vectra pulled over onto the hard shoulder of westbound M27 just before Rownhams services.

On the hard shoulder, the driver got out of the vehicle before it burst into flames and exploded, according to the fire service.

The driver was unhurt in the incident, which happened just after 3.45pm.

Two fire crews from Redbridge and Eastleigh arrived on the scene and brought the blaze under control, briefly closing two lanes in the process.

A spokesman for Hampshire fire and rescue said the fire and explosion had 'totally destroyed' the car.
