IT was called the Pretty Muddy – and it certainly lived up to its name.

Hundreds of women braved torrential rain, thunder and lightning to tackle a challenging five-kilometre assault course.

They were all crawling under and climbing over obstacles to raise money to help the fight against cancer.

Garrison Ground and University Sports Stadium in Winchester was the venue having been chosen to host one of 19 new events in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life series.

Among those taking part were a team of scientists based at the Southampton Cancer Research UK Centre.

The charity spent nearly £5 million last year in Southampton on the latest research to improve treatments.

Winchester’s usual Race for Life – 10 and five-kilometre runs – takes place tomorrow at the same venue from 11am.
