NATURE lovers learned about Southampton’s wildlife as they joined the hunt for all creatures great and small.

The city’s first BioBlitz event saw 200 people take part in an intensive survey of plants, bugs, bats and birds at the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus.

Experts and scientists from the university were on hand to help with the hunt and answer questions.

From lime hawk-moths to damsel flies, participants identified more than 150 species.

Dr Marcus Grace, senior lecturer in science education, led the event.

He said: “No one has ever recorded all the plants and animals that are in the university grounds before so we thought we should do this. I think we should try to do it at least once a year so that we can see how things are changing.”
