A MAN who pretended to be a ghost by shouting "wooooo" at mourners in a cemetery has been fined.

Anthony Stallard had been kicking a football around in a Hampshire graveyard with a friend, while also making spooky noises close to be people visiting the graves of their loved ones.

Police were alerted and arresed and charged Stallard, 24, with using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause distress.

Prosecutor Tim Concannon said: "He was throwing himself backwards, waving his arms about and going “wooooooo”. I’m assuming he was pretending to be a ghost."

The incident happened in Kingston Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Stallard was fined £35 for his behaviour, as well as being ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £20 and court costs of a further £20.

Three months were also added to an existing suspended 12 sentence as a result of his actions.

Rubbish. The judge is protecting people's rights to walk in public places without the fear of falling foul to stupid pranks.

Also, pranks have a place and a time. At a cemetery when people are visiting the graves of loved ones is a little inappropriate.

Possibly not, but who else can people turn to when idiots like that inflict themselves upon them? If people behaved with a bit more consideration for others the question wouldn't need to be asked.

Yeah I find the fact you can be arrested for doing this far more chilling than a man shouting woo and pretending to be a ghost.

The police will and do abuse this sort of power, 'threatening and abusive behaviour' can simply be raising your voice when you feel you've been wronged. I'm sure many of us have done that at some point in our lives but we shouldn't be made out as criminals for doingso.

This is REALLY funny, but definitely NOT worthy of an arrest and court case. Reminds me of a couple of incidents in my life ... my late father got me into family history and quite often made ghostly noises while visiting various graveyards and cemeteries. It was just part of the fun.

Then, about two years ago, I was photographing gravestones on the edge of Southampton where a public footpath ran through the cemetery. One stone was under trees so I used the flash ... and then heard some people screaming and running out the cemetery while shouting to an elderly couple "there's a ghost under that tree".

And by the way, my daughter was involved in a road traffic incident this afternoon to which the police were called. She and others involved where then accused by the attending officers of wasting police time because there were no serious injuries. I have suggested she makes a complaint to Hampshire Constabulary and, having read this story, I'm tempted to do the same myself!
