FIREFIGHTERS tackled a fire in a landmark building in Southampton Docks this morning.

Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service sent five fire appliances via Dock Gate 10 to the Rank Hovis Flour Mills in the Western Docks.

A spokesperson from the fire service said they were dealing with a blaze on the second floor of the building.

Two fire engines from St Mary’s, two from Hightown, one from Redbridge, an aerial ladder platform and a support vehicle were all on the scene since the call came in at just before 10am and were there for just over an hour.

Three police vehicles were also on the scene as well as two ambulances.

Scores of people were evacuated and stood outside the building inside the docks perimeter.

It is understood that a piece of machinery in the building caught fire and that crews managed to have the flames extinguished shortly before 11am.
