THERE is no question about it, Southampton-born entertainer David St John is the TV quiz show king of the world.

And now it is official, for he has written himself into the Guinness World Records for the most TV show quiz appearances.

The 65-year-old comedian’s quick-fire answers in more than 34 gameshows has made him the world’s most prolific TV contestant.

Gobsmacked at getting the world record, the father-of-two said: “I guess my love of quizzes goes way back to my early years as I used to enjoy school exams.”

He first cut his gameshow teeth on Sale of The Century in 1982 when he roared away with the star prize – two scooters.

Part of TV folklore and hosted by Nicholas Parsons, it was the UK’s most viewed gameshow. At its peak it was watched by more than 21 million viewers.

In an interview with the Daily Echo, David recalled that in 1982 his fellow contestant included a parish priest. David said: “I managed to beat the vicar on the buzzer for a couple of Bible questions.

“He was quite red-faced about it but took it in great fun.”

After Sale of the Century, David became a serial quiz contestant.

His encyclopaedic memory has been tested in a host of other shows including Music Match, Chain Letters, Winners Takes All, Wordplay, Eggheads, The Rovers Return Quiz Night and The Chase.

David’s thirst for knowledge began at an early age and he loved nothing better than trawling through the pages of encyclopaedias.

His dream is to host his own quiz show.

David, who has his own website at davidstjohn.co.uk, will be featured in ITV’s Come On Down! The Gameshow Story on August 17 at 7pm.
