ESSO has confirmed an oil spill at a refinery near Southampton.

The Environment Agency is investigating the spillage of light oil into Southampton Water after a leak at Fawley Refinery.

But Esso, which runs the site, said it acted quickly to contain the spill and prevent any contamination of the local area.

A spokesman said: “We can confirm that at approximately 1.30pm on Monday, October 6, a small quantity of light oil was released into Southampton Water from the Fawley site.

“Our local oil spill response procedures were immediately activated to contain and recover the oil. The local area has been checked as a precaution and there has been no impact.

“The Harbourmaster and the Environment Agency have been notified and we have begun a full review of the cause of the incident.

“We regret the spill, which has now been full resolved.”

An Environment Agency spokesman added they were happy with the action Esso took but would investigate as per “routine procedures.”
