THIS is the vision for a 3,500-home development which would create new schools and infrastructure.

Plans for the development, which developers hope will be created on land north of Whiteley, will go on show today.

A planning application for the project is expected to be submitted before the end of the year, and representatives from planners Terence O’Rourke will be present at the exhibition to speak to the public about the scheme.

A consortium of developers including Bovis Homes, JGP Lakedale, Taylor Wimpey and Crest Nicholson is behind the project.

Whiteley Town Council chairman Mike Evans said that the council would back the plans on the condition that the new infrastructure addresses existing problems in the area, including the addition of roads on the Winchester side of the town.

Cllr Evans said: “The priority for us has been to make sure that those matters have been agreed and will happen.

“A road will be built at Bluebell Way and the town council is pushing for the road to open earlier.

“At the moment if there’s a serious accident near the shopping centre then people who live on the Winchester side can’t get out, because the road will be closed.

“The town council is very keen on the strategy of consultation and engaging its residents.”

Problems have arisen regarding infrastructure in Whiteley, particularly at junction nine of the M27, where heavy traffic builds on a regular basis.

The development is not the only one planned in the area, and the mooted 6,000-home Welborne scheme near Fareham has proved hugely controversial.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, residents at an inquiry into the Welborne project raised issues regarding lack of health care and education resources in the area.

The exhibition will be held from 11am until 4pm today at the town council’s offices in Meadowside Leisure Centre.

Material shared at the event will be posted on the town council’s website following the event.
