HUNDREDS of runners faced the cold weather and took part in an annual fun run in aid of those affected by autism in Hampshire.

THE Somerley Estate near Ringwood hosted the event over the weekend in support of Autism Wessex, kick-starting the charity’s 50th birthday celebrations.

Following a thorough warm-up, participants had the choice of two chip timed routes around the grounds of the stately home on Saturday morning, which were the challenging 10km race followed by the 2km event beginning twenty minutes later.

Family and friends turned out to cheer on the runners with both serious and amateur competitors joining in. All those who completed the distances received a medal and a goody bag.

Autism Wessex fundraising executive Fiona Hawkins said: “It is our 50th birthday and we are planning a year-long celebration, kicking off with our Somerley Winter Run.

“At the run we will be launching our Team 50 challenge initiative. We are looking for 50 people to take on a challenge and pledge to raise £50 for us in 2018.”

Autism Wessex offers free information on a range of autism-related issues, as well as drop-in sessions, community support and residential services.
