Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino faces defensive dilemma as Jose Fonte returns
7:00am Tuesday 12th February 2013 in Sport
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
One of Alan Pardew’s best Saints buys is hoping to be fit enough to face his former boss.
Centre half Jose Fonte, recruited by Pardew for £1.2m three years ago, is on the verge of a first team comeback as Saints travel to Newcastle a week on Sunday.
As revealed by the Daily Echo at the time of his knee injury, Fonte has been ruled out for six weeks since being stretchered off during the FA Cup defeat to Chelsea.
During his time on the sidelines he has seen Nigel Adkins replaced as manager by Mauricio Pochettino, Vegard Forren recruited in his position at a cost of £4m and Jos Hooiveld, pictured, form an increasingly impressive partnership with Maya Yoshida.
It is sure to be a battle for Fonte to win back his place in the side but the Portuguese had been growing into the role of a top flight centre half before his injury struck.
But at least he is now closing on a first team return with the game at St James’ Park the current target.
Pochettino has a clear weekend thanks to that FA Cup defeat to Chelsea to prepare his team for the Newcastle match.
Though Saints hardly missed any of their injured first team players as they defeated champions Manchester City 3-1 at St Mary’s, he will be happy to have a fully fit squad to choose from as soon as possible.
His four other injured squad members are also expected to return in time for the Newcastle game.
Luke Shaw and Gaston Ramirez both missed the win over City but are pencilled in for a return in time for Newcastle.
Danny Fox limped off during the City victory but a fortnight to recover should see him ready to return while Guly do Prado is also expected back after a knee injury.
Whether Pochettino will be able to fit any of them into the side remains to be seen.Even captain Adam Lallana has still not broken back into the starting line up after a spell on the sidelines, such has been the form of Pochettino’s men.
Fonte will no doubt be keen to face off against the man who recruited him from Crystal Palace.
At the time the move to Saints was a drop in divisions for Fonte but in 137 appearances for the club he has played a major role in helping the side to back-to-back promotions to earn a place in the top flight.

Good time to have a break this weekend, hopefully we can buck our recent trend after having a week off and come out the traps firing with a few of the players that are injured with niggling injuries back in the team, I know you shouldn't change a winning team but adding Shaw and Ramirez to the team that played city and we're good to go for the final push towards safety

Yosi and Jos are looking a very good pairing.
He was becoming a very good prem CH and a fixture in the team before his setback.
Thats football!
He will have to wait his time like all the rest of our squad.
Aint it great to have quality players on the side lines available.
We are slowly joining the big boys.

It's too early to draw definite conclusions about just how good a manager Poch is, but the early indications are promising. I'm glad too see that so many people have picked up on how the players now press the opposition, sth we really didn't do a few months ago. It is a great way to not only stifle the opposition but to stop them getting into any sort of rhythm. Plus it forces potential mistakes which we can then capitalise on. We are now creating our own luck, sth Nigel didn't have the players do. But If we are to employ it week in and week out the player's stamina will have to be top draw!

With Mancini, he obviously didn't realise we were missing half our first team against them!

He was a very sound buy and has proved his worth.
He seems to lose his way when he has layoffs, particularly after injury.
Last season was an example, he injured his toe, it took a long time healing, and he wasn't the same player until the very end of the season, when he was outstanding.
This season he had grown into this league only to become injured once more.

Likewise, what chance of a start right now do Guly and Ramirez (and even Lallana) have? Davis has stepped up and JWP has hardly put a foot wrong. Ironically, the one whose place may be most under threat is Punch.
Just where does this run of form leave Lee? At least Mayuka has age on his side.
If I were Woy, my next England 11 would be:
Davis, Clyne, Martin, Seebourne, Shaw, Cork, JWP, Lallana, Rodriguez, Puncheon, Lambert.
Don't panic about the defence, with Cork and JWP in front of them, they'll not be needed. :)

Now he's left with some angry owners who have pumped a lot of money into the club and probably expected another title and maybe Champions league success. Bertie has to think on his feet and come up with any plausible excuse! Remember Jose Mourhinio looks like he's had his fill of Spain and is making serious noises about returning to the Premiership. Don't be surprised to see City get him. Bertie should be worried!

Also, Fox was at fault for the goal we conceeded against ManC. Firstly he completely misjudged the ball to him from the corner and then when ManC broke away he ran back (making it look like he was trying) only to give up leaving Clyne to cover both the middle and flank. I don't think its related to his fitness as it was still in the first half, I think he just can't be bothered and gives up far too easily. There is evidence of this earlier in the season against West Brom where he did the exact same, after this game NA dropped him for Shaw.
For me its got to be Fonte and Shaw to replace Jos and Fox.

....in recent games he has certainly tried, however every team has people who 'try' my sunday team had people who try....
....Guly offends people because he is one of tose players who flatters to deceive...
..players of lesser talent can be forgiven because they can only work with what they have got..
Guly continually misses sitters ( for a quality player) and just is not up for it the way for example Davis is who probably has less natural ability..
Trying harder for the last few games does not cut it, the commitment and desire when pulling on our shirt should be a given, period...
and with his inherent talent and everyones else's tooth and claw attitude
he should be so much more and deep down the fans sense that....
..however if his commitment becomes absolute and he starts scoring and not bottlng I will certainly support him..he a'int there by a long shot though.

Since when the crocodile hat did the number of games played have to do with anything?
It is the number of chances he has had and blown that has irritated people..it is not personal to Guly per se..any player with his talent who continually blows match winning opportunities would face the same opprobrium.

For me Jos is too slow, yes he did well against ManC, but if you look at the goal we conceeded at ManU both imo were his fault. I'm not talking about his running speed over 10-50yards but his movement and speed of thought in the first 2-3yards. He is constantly caught out and whilst it wasn't an issue in the Championship at this level it is far too evident.

That ball was so bad for him its not his fault. Obviously he was the intended target however the ball was placed so high up in the air any opposition could see the intention and take it off him.
Even if he had not attacked it with the intention to shoot and try and get it in the middle he would have been outmuscled against toure due to height.
This guy along with Clyne, Hooveild and Yoshida need massive praise. They only conceeded 1 goal against Manchester City.
The whole team deserve merit and praise.
Get off players backs and support the team no matter what. What more can you ask for? No goals to be conceeded? wake up and smell the coffee its the Prem

the effect our new manager has had so far has really been encouraging, by all accounts, he had espanyol playing the same kind of way before he had all his best players sold, and he is having the same effect on saints. Our squad players will start to also benefit on his fitness programme, which it pains me to say Guly. I think with more competition for the position of CB, that could be a reason for hoovers impressive performances, plus yoshida i think is going to be playing along side Forren, once match fit, for the foreseeable future. With Clyne and Shaw at full back, we have a solid back 4. Cork and Spider protecting them, our forward quartet can push on and get the goals.

Guly and Ramon.
Guly will be able to show his skills to
much better advantage as MP will
have a well defined role for him whenever he is in the team.Under
Nigel Guly was never sure what was expected of him and was often played out of position.
True Ramon has taken time to settle in.
Also he has had injuries and an earlier
personal problem.However, MP is
the man to fully realise Gaston's
potential and I think we will see a different player as the weeks progress.
With regard to Fox he put in a good
shift. His is a different style of player to
Shaw and MP adapted tactics accordingly - something which Nigel
was still getting to grips with.
One swallow does not a summer make
and one brilliant win does not a season make and of course we still have to
get the points to make sure of survival.
There has always been a good team spirit. With this and the new tactics from
MP this young and talented team will
surely be making an impact and will
finish the season mid table.
I admire everything Nigel did for us but
as you know from my posts I felt his
tactical ability was lacking and I was
quite certain that relegation was a real probability.I am sure he learned a lot
and in the future he will be be a manager of a Prem club.

Not really a Dilemma.
Keep same def apart from Fox who is not upto scratch anyway. Shaw will be back.
Couldn't give a toss about Guly being back as well, like playing with 10 men with him.
Quite easy team selection really!!
....in recent games he has certainly tried, however every team has people who 'try' my sunday team had people who try....
....Guly offends people because he is one of tose players who flatters to deceive...
..players of lesser talent can be forgiven because they can only work with what they have got..

That above is hilarious. How anyone can try and slate JWP who has been fantastic when coming on in the last 2 games is beyond me and play him ahead of Cork and Morgan. And it's off Britannia Road you prize tool

The thing to bear in mind about Mancini's comments is that he is literally dancing for his job. City's European expedition was a total unmitigated disaster and the club's Premiership aspirations all but evaporated on Saturday.

Together as one, no?
I just tried listing the current 25-man squad. I think I got it right (Ben Reeves slipped in at 25).
I don't think any of the 25 has let us down this season. All of them have done something good and something bad. Criticise Fox and you have to mention Shaw's lapse at Wigan; mention Guly and you have to question JayRod's chance/conversion rate. All 3 goalies have played their part (Davis made 2 penalty saves early on), all have blundered.
Let's support all of them in this sometimes frustrating but ultimately pivotal season. We can wait until May before looking at where the strengthening needs to happen for that next step - European domination.

Boruc Clyne Shaw Fonte Forren Cork Spider Punch Adam Jay Rickie
Gazza Fox Yos JWP Gaston Maka and S Davis
Gaston just seems a bit of luxury at the moment. Your thoughts.
If the problem is that the best team selection is written down on a list locked in the club safe - and the combination number for the safe is also locked in the safe - I don't really know the solution to that.
However, I do think Guly should be rested longer if he's injured or if he last night he dreamed he was a butterfly and then woke up this morning and wondered if he was in fact a butterfly dreaming it was a footballer.
Mauricio would also be well advised to tell the players in no uncertain terms that life isn't all beer and skittles. I haven't touched a skittle for thirty years and I've done really well.
The entire squad also needs to realise that a footballer's life can be both boring and dangerous at the same time. At any time as they run towards goal there could be a massive earthquake which swallows them up. But of course that never seems to happen and that makes it rather boring. Instead the players should retain a burning ambition to be what they were when they wanted to be what they are now.

Fox had a good game on Sat until he was injured. Though Shaw is such an exceptional talent that you would pick him first.
Guly has played well in recent games. I think he has talent and ability, like to see if MP can bring it out to its full, still a useful squad player at his best.
Hoov tends to get caught flatfooted check Rooney's 2nd goal, was on his own and never seemed aware of Rooney coming in. He has done well but not sure better than Fonte.
The difference is Yos, He is fast and quick has the pace those two lack, so he can help cover. As for Forren at the moment i do not see how anyone can make him a first choice CB until we have seen him play.
Gaston is either brilliant or frustrating and everything in between. Davies looks a different player under MP. Been impressive. As has Rod, still raw round the edges but more effective.
Adam's time will come, he is still getting match fit and is behind in learning the MP way. Buroc has proved himself and you actually feel fairly confident in the keeper for the first time this season.
Basically we have a squad that has to the end of the season prove itself.
Buroc, Clyne, Yos ? Shaw, JP, Jack, Morgan, Davies, J Rod, RL, subs, Adam, CB, Ramirez, Mayuka or Guly, or Fox, Davies.
Lol guess the manager would like a say in it somewhere.

I really want to see Forren play as he is a class player but it's hard to break up Hoover and the fantastic Maya.
Yes I am not a great fan of J-Rod... lets face it he missed the goal that Punchy scored and fluffed another chance when through, so I would take him off for Gaston and put Shaw instead of Fox (feel sorry for Fox, been playing great but Shaw is still better)
Guly... well for a brazillian he is not great, can you see him getting in the Brazil team for next year? No, and unfortunately we are getting out of his league. I met the guy, real nice bloke, but just not quite up to our increasing standards.

2. It cost's about £200 per trip with tickets, diesel and food.
3. I am self-employed so before I buy tickets I have to make sure I have funds to cover a minimum of 3 months worth of bill's.
4. If a game is live on sky I don't go as I already pay about £115 a month for my subscription.

With this in mind we don\t need to slag off ALL of the players who have been so much a part of the Clubs success over the past 3 years.
We are so lucky to have the Fonte, Guly Fox Hooveild all who have contributed so much to the success we had under Nigel.
All of them deserve the opportunity to prove themselves under MP and I am sure MP will make the right decisions where the selection of the team is concerned.
I have little doubt that next season we will be a top 6 club and MP will be one of the top Managers in Europe with a very unified Saints Club .

To me it doesn't matter whether someone has supported the club for 5 mins, 5 yrs or 50 years, whether they go to games, listen to games or watch on the tv, whether they are a box ticket holder, season ticket holder or just occasional visitor. All Saints fans are just that and entitled to their opinion. All these players helped us get promoted and all scored vital goals or gave assists.
I want to see how players perform under MP. because J Rod and Davies for example are playing far better now. It was only a few weeks ago everyone was groaning about Davies but i think he has been very important in the last three games for example. J Rod is becoming a better player with each game and at last is beginning to show potential.
We are at a stage when if Adam and Fonte etc are out we are not struggling.
The first 10 games this season were a real struggle, you cannot compare statistics of one CB without the other its not a fair reflection.
Fonte really came to terms with the game after that period. I think what the first 10 games proved is that Fonte and Hoov struggle as a partnership, they get turned too easily at this level but either can play with Yos who is more fluid.
Jack and Morgan give that steel and creativity in midfield. In my opinion and all this is only that, we played better at OT and Wigan when Davies came on at halftime, coincidence or not. he also was a very important factor on saturday.
The way we play now is refreshing and exciting.

Sorry to change the subject but it will be interesting to see how many of the worlds greatest football fans are at Hartlepool tonight. I remember on both occasions and both midweek games us filling the away section behind the goal, I wonder if they will be able to do the same.

Anyway - just to join in a bit ...
Best of luck to Jose, I have backed him all season and he has raised his game so I hope tpo see him back. Im very curious about Forren, he's getting his fitness together and all that but his chances of an appearance will probably improve once we have secured our place in thsi league for next season. Along with Tadanari Lee, and Mayuka I can see him being bench fodder for quite a while. Shame but its the harsh reality at this level.

Your thoughts.Have you seen Forren play????
I would like to see Lee start next to Rickie and give J-Rod a break, but I don't think it will happen. J-R is getting better, but if he is in for his pace, as quite a few say, then put Lee in, he knows where the net is and would walk past JR.
Lallana to start? I cant see who to take out, Cork has been fantastic along with Puncheon and my man of the season so far, Spider... so that leaves Davis to make way?
The only thing I am missing out here is no Poopey fans to take the "Piste" out of!

Seed agree 100%
Are there others that given the chance to step up might prove their worth? Why can't Chappers be a replacement for Cork when he gets injured or suspended, people say he isn't good enough but how do they know he wont lift his game as so many others have done?

Then having a go at a young CM who can't get in the first team but does well off the bench and thirdly he has a go at Guly haters and quotes his goals per game when he hasn't scored for over a year (not having a go at Guly) Also the fact that he says the ground is off Northam Road thought it was Britannia Road
I've been going since the late 60's as a boy, and even though I go to the games I still record them, come home and watch again as I can see more. My opinion isn't any more valid than someone who started going last week!
People like Strassie, Mush and warrens live abroad, how can they get to every game? Are they any less of a fan? They have as much passion as anyone else. I'm not usually rude about people unless they are skates but Gazzman is talking from his @rse!

For me it is Lallana or Ramirez battling out for one place - similar players but Adam wins it hands down for me at the moment. And I think he's shown he'll fight for the cause a bit more, and sustain it for longer, than Ramirez.

Roberto Mancini can bang on about international matches having cost his team but the truth is we out hustled them and forced their hand, thereby creating our own luck!
With Mancini, he obviously didn't realise we were missing half our first team against them!
I can't believe that even Lallana has to sweat his way back into the team.
Looking at the squads Pochie has picked, it is clear he rates a hard working midfield, a "trivote" (like Mourinho) fromed by Davis, Schneiderlin and Cork. I wouldn't wonder if he brought Chaplow into the team at some point. He is exactly the type of player he likes.
Problem is, that only leaves 3 spots up front, 2 if we take Lambert's presence for granted. 2 spots for players like Rodriguez, Ramirez, Puncheon and Lallana. Tough choice.
..I would take Lallana, Puncheon and Ramirez in that order before choosing him at present.
And Puncheon is doing really well.
Lallana will have to up his game (more pace, more pressing) even more in the near future if he wants to play. And he will. I think we haven't seen the best Lallana yet.
... also reminiscent of the early Giggs his final ball more often than not let him/us down..
...also he has more nearly goals to his credit than any other player..
His game is about 3-5% from being otherworldly.. ergo I do not want him to be another Joe Cole...

Need to keep some perspective here. I am as enthused as anyone else about the tranformation in our performances but I draw the line at all this talk of Hooiveld being a shoe in at centre half. For me he is the weak link in the team and Fonte should get his place back immediately assuming he is fully fit. Not so sure about AL - JRod or Davis would have to step down and both were superb against City. Nice problem to have. To my mind Gaston is the player who has to work hardest to get his place back in the starting line up.
Newcastle away is a tricky one - he may stick with three defensive midfielders depending on how attacking he wants to be, but I expect him to go with only two for all but the toughest fixtures, with Adam coming in for Davis in those.
Agree on Gaston too. For some reason I see him moving on fairly quickly come the summer, but would have to be on Saint's terms if he does.

Why don't we all agree that if he doesn't get picked by our fine, clearly inspirational, manager we'll accept that there may be something some of us are missing. He'll be being passed on by a team of people much better informed that all of us put together.
Equally, if he is played again, let's all accept the same. There must be something some of us are missing.
However, if he DOES end up on the pitch, every single one of us should hound any boo-ers out of St Marys with pointed sticks and furious vengeance.

I agree with a couple of posts above we have a squad and the team will differ to the opposition we face. Still think though whoever we play will be a high press. There will always be subs because of the work load on the midfield.
The thing is we have a Manager who knows this system and how to get the best from it and the players. Maybe a hairy run in but exciting.

It is healthy competition and Saints need this at the back so great to see. I thought that was the area where needed least improvement.
At the end of this season I think there will be quite a few moving out, and not all of them the players who were with us at the lower level and sitting watching now.
It is quite possible that some of our current heroes could be surplus after purchases.
It is also not impossible that unbelievable offers could be made to players who have now proved they can play in the Prem.
Yes I am a STH and have supported Saints for 40 years.
Players do leave .
Remember Mick Channon? Never going to leave, then MCFC offered him ridiculous money.
Be prepared for some upheaval . It has never been easy to support the Saints, if it was it wouldn't be so much fun

What the posts tell me is what a fantastic team we have! It seems that to an extent MP is spoilt for choice what a great position to be in!
As people know who have read my posts in the past I have been critical of certain players but I can truthfully say at this point in time there is not one player IMO who I can criticise. I'm impressed how certain players have upped their game. I think Guly, Gaston and Jose will do so once they're back and fit. I think MP is a good motivator and is getting the best out of the players.
I have sung JWP s praises many times however I wonder if he will get into the starting line up on Saturday the midfield was outstanding I think JWP will be used as a sub to come for when players tire like he did for Davis on Saturday who hadn't stopped running assuming of course there is room for JWP on the bench!!!
It's a fantastic position to be in being spoilt for choice and the rest of the season is an incredibly exciting prospect!

Sorry to change the subject but it will be interesting to see how many of the worlds greatest football fans are at Hartlepool tonight. I remember on both occasions and both midweek games us filling the away section behind the goal, I wonder if they will be able to do the same.
Come on Hartlepool.
What a place to end it all though.

MoPo will either make him or break him..the former would be utterly sensational for all concerned.

Then having a go at a young CM who can't get in the first team but does well off the bench and thirdly he has a go at Guly haters and quotes his goals per game when he hasn't scored for over a year (not having a go at Guly) Also the fact that he says the ground is off Northam Road thought it was Britannia Road
