Justin Rose will face Ernie Els in the second round of the WGC Match Play Championship, after beating Scott Piercy in his opening game.
The Hampshire star recorded a 1-up victory over his American opponent, at Dove Mountain, in Arizona, to set up today's clash with Els.
Rose was one behind through nine holes, but won the 11th, 12th and 14th to open up an advantage.
Piercy claimed the 17th to set up a nervous finale, but Rose halved the last hole to complete the victory.
Els beat Scotland's Stephen Gallagher at the first extra hole, with the South African due to take on Rose at 7.08pm UK time.
Whoever progresses will face the winner of the contest between Jason Dufner and Matteo Manassero.
