Ryan Garner’s stellar amateur career continues to flourish after he won his third national title.

The Southampton ABC boxer has another pair of Golden Gloves for his collection as he took his impressive record to 38 wins in 51 contests with victory over Jack Dickinson (Birtley ABC) in the class b 52-54kg National Junior ABA final with a unanimous points win.

The fight itself was far from a classic with Dickinson holding to try and prevent his decorated opponent from getting into a rhythm.

It meant Garner had to dig deep and work well on the inside to grind out a deserved victory.

His delighted coach, Gary White, said: “This was a really tough bout for Ryan because Dickinson came in with a plan to try and spoil things. He knew that was the only chance he had of winning.

“Ryan had stopped a good kid in the semi-final the week before with a vicious body shot so Dickinson was very wary of that but Ryan still managed to work well on the inside to the body and then coming up with right uppercuts which was hurting Dickinson.

“We are over the moon for Ryan and this title means so much to him and everyone at the club for several reasons, because since he won the European juniors the pressure and expectation on him has gone right up that anything other than winning this would have been seen as a failure.

“Also he came into these championships having not boxed in six months because no one wanted to face him.

“It’s been a frustrating time for all of us but Saturday made it all worthwhile.

“He’s a great lad who now has five major titles to his name and he thoroughly deserves his rewards.

“He will now box off next week for the right to represent England in the Three Nations championships in Wales in two weeks time.”

There has also been success for Garner’s stablemate Mitchell Turner who made it four wins from four as he beat Thomas Lanbe (Bushey ABC) on a Bushey ABC club show.

It was a closely fought bout with Turner’s cleaner shots getting him a deserved unanimous points win.

There was also victory for Jack Hillier against Safi Abdulah (Islington ABC). Hillier was totally outboxed in the first round but in the second he hurt Abdulah with several shots giving him a count.

He did the same at the start of the third before the other corner threw the towel in.

Harry Limburn also boxed on the same show losing a closely fought bout against Islington’s Tyrone Nagasi.
