12:57am

Former Premier League star Mario Balotelli's second-half goal gives Italy the three points. England showed plenty of attacking intent, but were still edged out. The pressure is on now for Thursday's game against Uruguay, who also lost earlier today. Thanks for joining us. We'll have a full report and reaction for you on the website shortly.

12:54am

ENGLAND 1 ITALY 2

12:53am

CHANCE (90+4 mins): From the resulting free-kick, Andrea Pirlo hits a stunning swerving free-kick that completely wrong-foots Joe Hart, but it slams against the top of the bar.

12:51am

Raheem Sterling booked for tripping Marco Parolo.

12:49am

Five minutes of added time signalled.

12:44am

CHANCE (85 mins): Adam Lallana is fouled by Daniele De Rossi just outside the area. Steven Gerrard bends the resulting free-kick over the wall, but the ball clears the bar by a few yards too.

12:39am

So, there he is. Adam Lallana is on for England, and the Saints captain has just over ten minutes to try and help his country rescue something from this game.

12:38am

ITALY (79 mins): Antonio Candreva off, Marco Parolo on.

ENGLAND (79 mins): Daniel Sturridge off, Adam Lallana on.

12:36am

CHANCE (77 mins): Salvatore Sirigu dives to his left to keep out Leighton Baines' free-kick from 25 yards, after Daniel Sturridge had been fouled by Giorgio Chiellini.

12:32am

ITALY (73 mins): Mario Balotelli off, Ciro Immobile on.

ENGLAND (73 mins): Jordan Henderson off, Jack Wilshere on.

12:31am

CHANCE (72 mins): England applying more pressure, as they search for the equaliser. Glen Johnson fires a long distance effort just wide with his left foot.

12:23am

CHANCE (64 mins): England break away after thwarting an Italian attack. The move ends with the ball being played to Ross Barkley down the left, with the Everton man cutting onto his right foot and aiming a low shot towards the far corner that Salvatore Sirigu tips away.

12:22am

Mario Balotelli heads Italy back into the lead...

Daily Echo:

12:21am

CHANCE  (62 mins): Leighton Baines slips a ball into Wayne Rooney, on the left side of the area. He turns and moves the ball onto his right foot, but drags his shot wide of the near post.

12:19am

ENGLAND (61 mins): Danny Welbeck off, Ross Barkley on.

12:15am

ITALY (57 mins): Marco Verratti off, Thiago Motta on.

12:11am

ENGLAND 1 ITALY 2 (Mario Balotelli 49)

Italy regain the lead, and it's former Manchester City forward Balotelli with the goal. The striker peels away to the back post, where he meets Claudio Marchisio's cross with a downward header that beats Joe Hart.

12:10am

CHANCE (48 mins): Daniel Sturridge cuts inside Daniele De Rossi and fires in a left-foot shot from 25 yards, which Salvatore Sirigu palms away.

12:04am

The second half is underway.

11:49pm

ENGLAND 1 ITALY 1

11:49pm

CHANCE (45+2 mins): Italy twice go close to regaining the lead in added time. Mario Balotelli is slipped through down the left, with Joe Hart racing out to meet him. Balotelli diverts the ball away from him, turns and then chips him, only for Phil Jagielka to get back and head off the line. Then, seconds later, Antonio Candreva finds space in the area, but his low shot from an angle strikes the post.

11:45pm

Claudio Marchisio celebrates giving Italy the lead...

Daily Echo:

...But no sooner has he put his team in front than Daniel Sturridge pops up with this equaliser...

Daily Echo:

11:40pm

Slightly bizarre scenes, as England physio Gary Lewin is stretchered off, after suffering a badly injured leg during the celebrations for England's goal.

11:39pm

ENGLAND 1 ITALY 1 (Daniel Sturridge 37)

England level almost immediately. Wayne Rooney is sent away down the left, and he sends a beautiful cross towards the far post, where Daniel Sturridge runs in to slam home.

11:37pm

ENGLAND 0 ITALY 1 (Claudio Marchisio 35)

Italy edge in front and what a fine goal it  is. The ball arrives at the feet of Claudio Marchisio 25 yards out, after Andrea Pirlo's glorious dummy, and the Juventus man strikes a low right-foot shot into the far corner, past a diving Joe Hart.

11:30pm

England's Raheem Sterling and Italy's Marco Verratti battle for the ball.

Daily Echo:

11:26pm

CHANCE (24 mins): After Mario Balotelli fires over from 25 yards, England go close to taking the lead. Danny Welbeck gets in behind the Italy defence, reaches the byline and cuts the ball back towards Daniel Sturridge, who is running in towards the edge of the six-yard box. It looks like it will be an easy tap in for the Liverpool forward, but Andrea Barzagli slides in and somehow deflects the ball across goal and wide of the far post.

11:20pm

CHANCE (19 mins): Antonio Candreva fires in a swerving, low shot that Joe Hart struggles with. The England keeper gets his body behind the shot, though, and keeps it out, although he is unable to hold the effort.

11:14pm

The England players pictured below, in their huddle moments before kick-off.

Daily Echo:

11:13pm

CHANCE (11 mins): A poor clearance from Italy gifts the ball to Danny Welbeck 25 yards out, but his right-footed drive is a couple of yards wide of the far post.

11:06pm

CHANCE (4 mins): Raheem Sterling goes oh so close...so close, in fact, that even the BBC pictures initially awarded him with a goal. His fierce shot from 25 yards looks like it's nestled in the top corner, but it just went the wrong side of the post.

11:00pm

Referee Bjorn Kuipers blows his whistle, and England's 2014 World Cup campaign is officially underway.

10:54pm

Here come the teams out onto the pitch at the Arena Amazonia, in Manaus. Kick-off just a few minutes away now.

10:50pm

Daily Echo: Maya Yoshida

After England, it is the turn of Saints defender Maya Yoshida to take centre stage in Brazil. Japan face Ivory Coast at 2am UK time. We probably won't live blog that one, to be honest.

10:43pm

And here's an excited England fan...

Daily Echo:

10:42pm

The fans are already getting into the mood inside the stadium in Manaus. Here's one Italy fan looking forward to kick-off...

Daily Echo: Ronald Koeman

For any Saints fans who haven't seen the news yet, the club are closing in on making Ronald Koeman their new manager. A contract was offered to the 51-year-old last night, and it is hoped a deal will be concluded in the coming days. Read our story here.

10:34pm

10:30pm

Rickie Lambert may have already left St Mary's to join Liverpool this summer, but many fans in our part of the world are still considering him a Saint for the World Cup. The good news is that the official teamsheet is doing the same...

Daily Echo:

10:25pm

Daily Echo: Picture: Action Images

It's been a bad start to the World Cup for Saints playmaker Gaston Ramirez. Not only did he not make it onto the pitch for his country's opening game, but he watched as they were shocked 3-1 by Costa Rica. It puts the South Americans in deep trouble, ahead of Thursday's encounter with fellow Group D opponents England.

10:23pm

It's bad news for Saints duo Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, with both being left on the bench. Raheem Sterling is preferred to Lallana, who had looked set for some time to start tonight. Ex-Saint Rickie Lambert is on the bench also. Italy are without veteran keeper Gianluigi Buffon, after he suffered a twisted ankle. The 36-year-old is among Italy's subs.

10:00pm

THE LINE-UPS

ENGLAND: Hart; Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines; Gerrard, Henderson; Sterling, Rooney, Welbeck; Sturridge.

Subs: Foster, Forster, Smalling, Jones, Shaw, Lampard, Wilshere, Milner, Barkley, Lallana, Lambert.

ITALY: Sirigu, Chiellini, Darmian, Candreva, Marchisio, Balotelli, Barzagli, De Rossi, Paletta, Pirlo, Verratti.

Subs: Perin, Buffon, Thiago Motta, Abate, Cassano, Cerci, Aquilani, Immobile, Parolo, Bonucci, Insigne, De Sciglio.

Without Adam, Luke (and yes, even Sir Rickie) in the starting line, I will endeavour to maintain a semblance of interest in the match.

In the second half we have had most of the possession, but little creativity. We need accurate shooting practice. Made it too easy for Italy to coast.

It was like Roy was defending Rooney before anyone was having a go.
He was terrible again, Roy has to have the balls to say enough is enough.

In the Euros of 2012 Pirlo dictated the game, were no lessons learned?
He did it again last night... made us look bad and Italy are pretty poor right now.

Just heard someone say last nights defeat was ok because we played well?
I thought we were awful and just fell into Italy's trap.
What was the point of playing 4 forwards when none of them put any pressure on Italy's defenders when they were in possession, we tried to play a game that was alien to our players.. Not very clever Roy.
