England fall to Italy in World Cup opener

Mario Balotelli celebrates his winning goal

Mario Balotelli celebrates his winning goal

Saints captain Adam Lallana came off the bench for the final ten minutes of England's opening World Cup match, but he could not prevent them falling to a 2-1 defeat against Italy.

Roy Hodgson's men produced some good attacking football, but they emerged from their trek into the jungle with a nothing to show for it, thanks to Mario Balotelli's winner in the draining heat of Manaus.

Balotelli scored the decisive goal for the Azzurri five minutes into the second half after Daniel Sturridge had cancelled out a Claudio Marchisio effort.

At times, England looked extremely dangerous in attack. Raheem Sterling, making just his third England start, impressed inside the Arena Amazonia with his quick thinking and quick feet.

Sterling, Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson all went close in the first half, as both teams created decent openings.

But defensive shortcomings cost England again.

Marchisio fired Italy in front in the 35th minute, slamming a low shot into the far corner from 25 yards after Andrea Pirlo's exquisite dummy.

But England levelled two minutes later, as Wayne Rooney scampered away down the left and produced a superb ball to the back post that Sturridge side-footed home.

However, Italy regained the lead four minutes into the second half when Gary Cahill lost Balotelli at the back post, as the former Manchester City man headed in Marchisio's cross.

Rooney missed two decent chances, while Lallana was thrown on in the dying stages, but Italy held firm and nearly added a third when Pirlo hit the bar with a free-kick in added time.

England's attentions now turn to Thursday's huge clash in Sao Paulo with Uruguay, who suffered a shock 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica in their opening match

Just awful .. again. play 4 strikers and let italy ping the ball about at ease, not the right tight to change tactics Roy.
Can people just accept that Rooney is, and has always been, a waste of a shirt...
Very poor, for the italians it was a stroll in the park.

We play the same Players that get beaten - and then after all the talk of trying new Players - We play the same Players again - and once again we get beaten.

Although CROSS with the Saints contingent after all that has happened this Summer - would like to have seen Ex Saint Rickie feature - Adam and Luke like Displaced Fan - but would it make them even more FULL OF THEMSELVES.

Even though it is ENGLAND - there are MIXED FEELINGS IN THE SOUTH and I did hear a few loud cheers when Italy scored.

This is what happens every time. England will draw their next match, and everybody will be slagging off the players and coaches. Then you'll win the last match and qualify for the next round. You'll beat a second-rate team in the next stage and all is forgiven and (more importantly) forgotten. The country starts to dream. Maybe we are world beaters! This time, more than any other time, this time, we'll get it right! Quarter-finals, here we come. Draw after extra time, and defeat on penalties, if you're lucky. This is the way it always happens. This is the way it's panning out this year.

I think Sterling played excellent football whilst Rooney was awful through most of the match. The first half we played with flair and good attacking football. 2nd half maybe the heat got to them but as the game wore on we got worse. Adam didnt really get a chance to shine or do much in the time he was on. Would rather have Roy in charge than Cappello. I think we will beat Uruquay on Thursday. Wonder if Roy will be brave and drop Rooney for that one?

Same old same old. Rooney didn't deserve a starting berth and although he put in the cross for the goal was largely anonymous. Not world class. Italian tactics were spot on. Pirlo always seemed to have space and time. Sheer class. Our youngsters did OK, but great performance? Nah. Bring on Wilshite. Why on earth? Should've been Rickie for Henderson instead. I don't think we will beat Uruguay. Suarez will return to deliver the coup de grace. Exit England...

We were beaten by marginally better tactics, in hindsight I would have started Lallana for an hour of his headless chicken run around, then brought on Sterling for half an hour of pace. I thought Baines was a bit naive at the back allowing the winger to cut inside. Apart from Rooney the rest put in a good shift in the circumstances, just wasn't our turn.

Sterling and Sturridge were both fantastic. Lallana wasn't on long enough to be able to influence the game but he would have offered nothing new to what we were doing all night which was looking great until we got within shooting distance. Ricky might have made a difference in the box - we'll never know. The left side was a shambles - wonder if bringing on Shaw and putting him in front of Baines might have given more protection down that flank and offer a more effective attacking option down that flank too. Rooney (apart from a fantastic cross leading to the goal, huffed and puffed and achieved nowt)
Woy brought on the wrong Saint IMHO.

Nobody's answered this idiotic question yet, probably because the answer's so blindingly obvious.
Roy had 'found' someone that would actually make this team tick, had flair and the nous to unlock this kind of game, help counteract Pirlo and then he did not have the courage of his convictions and he dropped him when it mattered.
Would possibly take Rooney if he was wrapped up with 25k for Luke or IN EXCESS of £35k for Adam.

Given the choice, would Southampton supporters have either Rooney or Lallana in next years lineup.[/p]
Would possibly take Rooney if he was wrapped up with 25k for Luke or IN EXCESS of £35k for Adam.[/p]
No not sarcasm, definitely meant M (Million) not K (Thousand) This was a Freudian rather than Kruegerian slip. lowe esteem
