Schneiderlin last Saint standing in Brazil after Ramirez exit
Ramirez and Schneiderlin were the only two Saints to make it to the last 16, but that is where the former’s tournament ended as Uruguay were beaten 2-0 by Colombia.
The £12m midfielder again had to settle for a place on the bench, but was introduced after 53 minutes with his side two goals down in an attempt to try and turn things around.
However, without the fire power and quality of the banned Luis Suarez, they never really looked all that threatening in the final third.
It was the man of the moment James Rodriguez that really did the damage to Uruguay.
He opened the scoring on 28 minutes with a stunning chest down and volley that flew in off the underside of the bar.
He then doubled Colombia’s advantage five minutes into the second half before the introduction of Ramirez.
The Saints man did lift Uruguay for a late rally but was always fighting a losing battle by that stage and now has a short break before returning to St Mary’s for pre-season training.
Schneiderlin is hoping for some action on Monday as France take on Nigeria for a place in the quarter-finals.
