DEFENDER Scott Sampson has gone back to his roots and signed up for Newport IoW for the forthcoming Sydenhams Premier Division campaign.

The highly regarded centre-back won the Sydenhams Premier Division with Blackfield & Langley two seasons ago after a spell playing Southern League football for AFC Totton during Stuart Ritchie’s time at the helm.

He appeared in a handful of games for Newport towards the end of last season, helping them to a fourth-placed finish, and has now been unveiled by the Islanders as their first summer signing.

Sampson – 25-year-old son of former Port striker and Cowes Sports boss Andy – began his career at AFC Bournemouth where he captained the reserves. Following his release from Dean Court he joined the Marines.

“Scott is a great signing for us,” smiled delighted Newport boss Steve Brougham.

“Obviously he couldn’t commit to playing for us last season, but with him playing hopefully every week for us this year and with his winning mentality, we’ll be a better team for it.

“Other clubs have been interested in him, but I’m just really happy he’s agreed to sign for Newport."
