Ronald Koeman is taking his Saints team abroad next week

First published in Sport

Saints have ditched plans for a high-profile away friendly this summer, but will now begin pre-season overseas.

The club will play two low-key matches next week, starting in the Netherlands and then moving to Belgium.

They will begin with a fixture against Dutch fifth-tier side EHC Hoensbroek on Tuesday, with kick-off set for 7pm local time (6pm UK) at SportPark de Dem, in Hoensbroek.

Ronald Koeman's team then face Belgian third division outfit KSK Hasselt, at the Stedelijk Sportstadium, on Thursday (7pm local/6pm UK).

The team will wear the new all-navy away strip, which was unveiled last night, for both matches.

Tickets for the first game cost between €5 and €8 on the turnstiles.

For the second match, tickets are available from the Stedelijk Sportstadium ahead of the contest, priced at €10.

Saints had originally said they were organising a high-profile away game against notable European opposition between the friendlies against Brighton and Bayer Leverkusen, but that is no longer taking place.

would be good and useful to know why this high profile foreign match was abandoned. The article is missing huge amounts of information

Slowly, slowly..... has the funds to buy the right players, but most transfers these days take time.
Even with the depleted squad we have right now, we'll still be better than half of the league sides.

Fully understand it takes time to sign new players but with the number we
need I don't think we are going to hit the ground running at the start of the
season. Ron has my full support in what has been a very difficult start for
him and I hope fans will be patient if results do not go our way to begin
with.

We are currently being linked with jack Rodwell - used to be a quality player 2 seasons ago then took the money option and has dissappeared into the obscurity that is Manchester City same as Scott Sinclair, at least they got their English quota up for the CL matches with them

I think you could probably make a safe assumption that Koeman wants to spend as much time with his group of players that he can, to outline exactly how he wants to play and to see who best fits into those roles - best place for that is at our state of the art training facilities. I understand he wants a short trip abroad pre-season to get everyone to gel (including himself) so the perfect choice would be in familiar surroundings and against lower opposition.
No worries here.

Last summer, quite a few people on here were claiming that we were so slow with our signings and we bought so few new players that we wouldn't be able to hit the ground running. Norwich, they said, had the right idea.
