Steven Davis and Northern Ireland are hoping to take a giant step towards qualification for Euro 2016 tomorrow.

The Irish have been one of the surprise packages of the campaign so far, and could this weekend strengthen their hopes of reaching a first major tournament since the 1986 World Cup.

Michael O’Neill’s team host Finland, knowing a victory will significantly enhance their prospects.

After four games, Northern Ireland are second in Group F, having won away to Hungary and Greece, as well as at home to Faroe Islands.

Their nine points put them just one behind leaders Romania, who are the only side to have beaten them so far.

A win against Finland, who have four points from four games, would, therefore, undoubtedly be huge for the team.

“To be fair, it’s a massive game for us in terms of our qualifying campaign,” said Davis.

“I think when we looked at the campaign to start with it’s our home games that are going to take us really in the group, but, obviously, we’ve played three tough away games so far and put ourselves in a good position, so this is a really important one in terms of momentum and how our campaign will develop really.

“After this game it will only be the halfway point, so there’s still a long way to go, but, as I say, it’s the same with any season, it’s important to keep the winning mentality and the momentum going as well – that’s why it’s such an important game for us.”
