GLASGOW'S Lord Provost Liz Cameron is backing a fundraising run organised by the British Lung Foundation. Glasgow Green will host the Lung Run on August 27. Liz Cameron was less concerned with the state of people's lungs, however, when she was unveiling Machargs, the largest car showroom in Europe, on August 11 at Glasgow Harbour.

In the UK, 30,000 people die prematurely every year because of vehicle pollution. Cars are the biggest contributor to the growing epidemic of breathing problems, including asthma.

The number of cars in Scotland has risen to a record 2.53 million, clocking up 27 billion miles last year. Lung disease and obesity are the consequences. In the case of the new carshowroom, this is made worse by the fact that a cycle path was destroyed in order to make way for it, part of Sustrans route 7 connecting Glasgow to Loch Lomond.

Clearly the council is happy to organise public relations exercises that promote health, in order to distract from its policy of destroying the resources that make healthy lives possible.
